I had been waiting to attempt my first 6’000m peak for a while, and with my acclimatisation going well, I was keen to give it a shot.

Island Peak was to be my first real challenge of the trip. It is steeped in history – it’s first ascent was made in 1953 as part of a training exercise in preparation for the later-successful British Everest Expedition Team.

It sits only a short distance from Everest, extending out from the South end of Lhotse, appearing as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. Found in the Khumbu region of Nepal, it has a little bit of everything – remote base camps, almost in-penetrable rock bands, wild glacier crossings, fixed-line ascents on sheer terrain and a knife-edged ridge leading to the summit. Island Peak (6’189m) is a classic high-altitude mountaineering objective.
